I have had Wire Foxes as pets since 1958. In 1987 I began my career in obedience training with my Wire Fox Terrier, Sam. I was told "You don't think you will EVER do ANYTHING with THAT TERRIER, do you?" THAT Wire dog went on to receive over 20 different titles in 2 countries, including American Kennel Club Obedience, United Kennel Club Obedience, States Kennel Club Obedience, Canadian Kennel Club Obedience, American Working Terrier Association, Therapy Dog International, Canine Good Citizenship. He excelled at everything — Obedience, Agility, Tracking, Field Hunting and most importantly — friend. Sam was my “Crown Prince of Goof Off.” I never knew if he would go into the ring and score high or just play for the laughs. It was very hard to think I could get a dog to replace Sam, but I have been lucky. I have shared precious friendships with many Wires over the course of my adult life. Earth Dog champions, therapy dog heroes, wonderful Wires who made beautiful mothers. My Susie fostered 8 Mini Schnauzers, 1 Austrian Terrier, 2 Bearded Collies, 1 Bishon, and 2 Kittens. Finally came Liebshen (pictured left). She is my "Border Collie in a Fox Terrier Coat." What a little show off. She loves life.
I find that there is not just one method of training. You have to find what works for the dog you are training at the time, and with Terriers, they think "I did it right the first time, I did it right the second time, WHY the heck do you want me to do it a third time, I think I will do it my way." You have to give them one good reason why you want it done YOUR WAY. A good rule to remember when training dogs is "You end up with the dog you deserve. Train, don’t complain."
